Customs after Brexit: moving personal belongings from Austria to the UK
Since Brexit, household goods moving from the EU to the UK go through customs, and with the right paperwork, you pay no import duty or VAT on your own belongings:
- Apply for Transfer of Residence (ToR1) relief on gov.uk before your move if you’re transferring your normal home to the UK. Approval gives you a unique reference number (URN) and your personal effects clear duty-free.
- Apply early – processing takes from a few days to several weeks, and your URN needs to exist before the van crosses.
- Keep an inventory – a simple list of boxes and contents is required for clearance; your driver will ask for it.
- Some items can’t travel – open food, plants and restricted goods are best left out of an international load.
